Pool Water Too Bright or Irritating Eyes? The pH and Balance Fix

Pool Water Too Bright or Irritating Eyes? The pH and Balance Fix

Guests climbing out with red, stinging eyes is a quiet review-killer — and owners reliably blame the wrong culprit. It is almost never “too much chlorine.” It is balance. The real cause and the fix:

The actual cause: pH, not chlorine

Comfortable water sits close to the body’s own pH (~7.4). When pool pH drifts too low (acidic) or too high, water stings eyes and dries skin regardless of chlorine level. The chloramine problem (under-sanitised water) adds to it. So the fix is balancing, not removing chlorine.

What throws balance off in Bali

  • Rain dragging pH down fast
  • Heavy bather load from a full villa
  • Top-up water shifting the chemistry
  • Infrequent testing letting it drift between visits

The fix and the prevention

Test and correct pH to ~7.2–7.4, confirm sanitiser is actually working (shock if chloramines are present), and check alkalinity as pH’s stabiliser. Then prevent recurrence with twice-weekly testing — the drift that irritates eyes is exactly what consistent care prevents. For rentals, comfortable water is a five-star detail.

Red eyes aren’t too much chlorine — they’re unbalanced water; fix the pH and the stinging stops.
