The Pool Upgrades Guests Actually Notice (Ranked by a Team That Reads the Reviews)
Here is an uncomfortable pattern from years of servicing rental pools: owners spend on what impresses them — extra metres, exotic features — while guest reviews mention an entirely different list. The renovation budget that maximises stars follows the guest’s senses, not the owner’s pride. The ranking, from the reviews themselves:
What actually gets mentioned
- 1. Water that feels like the photos: sparkling clarity and balanced, soft-feeling water — the invisible upgrade delivered by renewed equipment and disciplined care; a saltwater conversion is this category’s premium play, and ‘the water was incredible’ is its review
- 2. The pool at night: guests holiday in the evenings — a designed lighting scene converts every dusk into content, and appears in reviews as ‘magical’
- 3. Somewhere to be IN the water: the ledge, bench or shallow shelf — retrofittable in a reshape, and the feature families and groups actually use all day
- 4. Underfoot honesty: smooth (not rough), grippy (not slick) surfaces and a deck that does not burn feet — discomfort is reviewed; comfort is rebooked
What rarely earns its line
Extra size (guests never measure), depth (they stand and lounge), and features that photograph better than they function. None are wrong as owner pleasures — just do not book them as ROI.
The renovation brief this writes
The guest-optimised makeover: equipment and water quality first, lighting second, a social ledge third, surfaces fourth — most of it fitting a two-week window or a staged host’s schedule. Spend where the senses are; the stars follow.
Guests cannot review what they do not notice — renovate for the senses and the reviews write themselves.
