Landscaping Around a New Pool: Planting for Paradise Without Feeding the Algae

A Bali pool without its garden is a bathtub with ambitions — the frangipani leaning over turquoise, the heliconia wall, the lawn to the water’s edge: that is the postcard. But every planting choice around a pool is also a maintenance decision, and the difference between the garden that frames the water and the garden that quietly ruins it is knowable in advance. The landscaping rules we wish every new pool followed:

The debris maths

Everything that grows above or beside the pool eventually visits it — and each species drops at its own rate. The heavy shedders (many palms, flame trees, anything deciduous-behaving) directly over water are a daily skimming subscription and a steady phosphate feed; the beloved frangipani earns its place near the pool, blossoms staining if left to steep. The working rule: canopy trees stand back from the waterline with their drop zones on deck or lawn (where blowers win in seconds), while the pool’s immediate frame goes to low-shed structure — cycads, cordylines, dracaena walls, sculptural clumping bamboo at distance.

The root honesty

Roots follow water, and your pool is the biggest water in the garden: aggressive rooters (bamboo running varieties, large ficus, mature palms too close) will find pipe runs and test shells over years. Plant the giants a respectful distance out, use root barriers where the design insists on closeness, and remember the plumbing runs when placing anything ambitious — the leak found under a ten-year-old tree is the expensive kind.

Designing the frame

Layers do the postcard work: groundcovers to the deck edge, mid-height colour and texture, green walls for privacy without shade, and one or two hero specimens placed for the camera line. Lighting shares trenches with pool circuits if planned together; irrigation keeps the frame lush through the dry season; and the ongoing care keeps the whole composition from reverting to jungle. Landscape with the pool build — shared levels, drainage and access — and both cost less than either alone.

Plant the paradise deliberately and the pool stays blue inside it — the garden and the water are one design.

New pool, blank garden?

We design and plant pool landscapes that frame the water without feeding it — as part of the build or after.
