Where to Put the Pool: Placement, Sun and Orientation on a Bali Plot
Here is the design decision that outranks every other, made before a single line is drawn: where on the plot the pool actually sits. Get placement right and an ordinary pool feels inevitable; get it wrong and no finish budget rescues it. Yet placement gets minutes of thought against the weeks spent on tiles. The factors, in the order they deserve:
Sun: the non-negotiable first question
A pool in shade is a pool unused. Track the sun across your plot through the day (and remember it shifts across the year — Bali’s sun stands north of overhead mid-year): the pool wants generous exposure from late morning through afternoon, which usually means keeping it clear of the villa’s own shadow and the big trees’ afternoon reach. Bonus rule: west-facing water catches the golden hour — the dusk photograph is an orientation decision.
The livability stack
- Sightlines: visible from the living pavilion and kitchen — half hospitality (the pool is the view), half safety (supervision by architecture)
- Wind: Bali’s breezes cool people and evaporate pools — exposed ridgelines and beach-front plots pay a real evaporation tax; walls and planting can shelter without shading
- Privacy: from the lane, the neighbour’s upper floor, the next villa’s rooftop deck — walk the plot’s overlooked angles before fixing the spot
- Trees: beautiful neighbours, terrible landlords — canopy overhead means daily debris and algae food, roots nearby mean future structural arguments; plant around the pool deliberately instead
The practical layer
Equipment wants a home within sensible pipe runs but out of earshot of bedrooms (the equipment room guide); setbacks and drainage shape what is permissible; and slope either costs money or — aimed at a view — earns it back as an infinity opportunity. Placement is where our design brief conversation always starts on site, walking the plot at the right time of day.
An hour on the plot with the sun and a tape measure is worth more than any moodboard — placement is the design.
