Infinity Pool Cost in Bali: What That Edge Really Costs to Build
The Bali infinity pool is the shot everyone knows: water dissolving into ocean or jungle, no visible edge, the photo that sells a villa before a guest reads a word of the listing. If you own a view plot — Uluwatu’s cliffs, a Ubud valley, a Canggu rooftop — you have probably priced the dream. Here is what that edge genuinely costs, why, and how to build one that still works in ten years.
What makes an infinity pool different (and dearer)
An infinity (vanishing-edge) pool is really two pools and a weir: the main pool, a precision-built spillover edge, and a catch basin below that collects the overflowing water and pumps it back. That adds structural work, waterproofing area, a second circulation system and exacting engineering — the edge must be level to within millimetres across its full length, or the “sheet of water” effect breaks. It is the least forgiving thing you can build in concrete beside a cliff.
What it costs in Bali
A conventional quality villa pool in Bali runs roughly IDR 150–250 million (see our full pool cost guide). An infinity pool starts above that and climbs with the site: expect the edge, catch basin and extra structure to add a meaningful premium, and expect IDR 350 million upwards for a genuine infinity build — with dramatic cliffside projects going well beyond as structural engineering scales. The honest headline: on an infinity pool, the site is often a bigger cost driver than the pool.
Why the site drives the price
- Cliff and slope engineering. The plots with the views — the Bukit, Uluwatu, hillside Ubud — need retaining structures, deep foundations and serious structural design. This is exactly where cutting cost is most dangerous.
- Access. Getting materials and machinery to a clifftop or terraced site adds real money.
- Coastal exposure. Ocean-view means salt air: marine-grade materials and proper waterproofing are mandatory, not optional. A cheap coastal build corrodes and cracks within a few years — the classic tropical-build failure.
- The finish. Infinity pools live or die on the visual: dark stone or glass tile finishes that create the mirror effect cost more than standard ceramic.
What owners are never told: running an infinity pool
The vanishing edge runs a second pump for the spillover, loses more water to evaporation and wind (that thin sheet of falling water is an evaporation machine), and the catch basin needs cleaning like a small second pool. None of this is a reason not to build one — it is a reason to budget for slightly higher running and maintenance costs, and to have it serviced by people who understand two-body systems.
Getting it right the first time
- Insist on structural engineering for the specific site, not a standard pool design placed on a slope
- Ask exactly how the edge level will be achieved and verified
- Confirm marine-grade specification for anything coastal
- Build in the dry season — complex concrete work and monsoon rain are a bad mix
- Choose a builder who will still be there afterwards: an infinity pool deserves a builder who also maintains what they build
