Regrouting a Pool: When the Grout Is the Renovation

Regrouting a Pool: When the Grout Is the Renovation

Here is the pool problem hiding in plain sight across older Bali villas: the tiles are genuinely fine — it is the grout between them that is eroded, stained dark, or crumbling out in lines. Owners see tired tiles; the truth is tired joints. And regrouting — unglamorous as it sounds — is a real renovation with real returns, because grout is not cosmetic: it is the waterproofing between every tile.

What failing grout actually risks

  • Water behind the finish: open joints let pool water track behind tiles — the beginning of the loose-tile cascade and a contributor to slow water loss
  • Biology in the lines: porous, aged grout is black algae’s favourite real estate — the spots that survive every shock live in the joints
  • The permanent-grubby look: stained grout reads as a dirty pool no matter how perfect the water — and no cleaning fixes what is stained through

Why Bali grout dies young

Tropical chemistry duty (constant chlorine and pH swings), scale cycles at the waterline, and the island’s classic original sin: budget cement grout installed fast during the build boom. Standard grout here is a consumable; which is why the regrout is the moment to upgrade to epoxy grout — near-waterproof, stain-resistant, algae-hostile, and the reason properly renovated pools stop having grout conversations for a decade.

The job, honestly scoped

Old grout mechanically raked out to depth (the skipped step in cheap regrouts — smearing new over old fails within a season), joints cleaned, epoxy set with craft (it is less forgiving to apply, which is where professional hands earn the line item), cured before refill. Often bundled with a waterline refresh or deep clean in one lowered-water window.

Same tiles, new joints, different pool — grout is the cheapest transformation nobody thinks to buy.

Joints past their best?

Close-up photos of the grout lines are all we need to scope it — and to tell you if epoxy solves it for a decade.
