Adding a Pool to an Existing Villa: The Bali Retrofit Guide
Plenty of Bali villas were built pool-less — older family homes, budget builds, properties where the previous owner never got around to it. If you own one, you own the island’s most common renovation dream: adding the pool afterwards. It is very doable, often transformative, and different from building alongside a new villa in exactly the ways that decide your quote. Here is the retrofit reality:
What makes a retrofit different
- Access is the price-maker: a new-build site is open ground; your finished villa has walls, gates and gardens between the excavator and the pool site. Machine access through a 1.2m side gate versus over a wall versus hand-digging can swing the cost more than the pool’s size does
- Protecting what exists: the build must not wreck the garden, crack the paving or flood the neighbour — site protection, spoil removal routes and drainage planning are real line items a greenfield build never sees
- Working around services: septic tanks, water lines and electrical runs are wherever the original builder left them — locating them before digging is cheaper than finding them with the excavator
The design opportunity
Retrofits get one advantage new builds never do: you already live with the property, so you know exactly where the afternoon sun lands, where the wind funnels, and which corner the villa’s life gravitates to — the placement decisions that new-build owners guess at, you can make from experience. Compact plots usually land on a plunge pool or courtyard design, and generous ones on the full sizing conversation.
Cost and process honestly
Expect a retrofit to run somewhat above an equivalent new-build pool once access and protection are priced — the structure itself follows the same per-metre logic, and the same non-negotiables apply: proper waterproofing, PBG permitting, and dry-season timing. The process mirrors the standard build stages with a protection-and-access chapter added at the front.
The villa you already love, plus the pool it always needed — retrofits are our favourite transformations for a reason.
