Bali’s older pools share a design assumption their owners no longer do: that people get in, swim, and get out. A generation of deep rectangles with a token ladder now serves owners and guests who want to be in the water — lounging ankle-deep, perched on a bench with a drink, toddlers paddling on a shelf. The good news: comfort retrofits into existing concrete are a solved problem. The honest guide:
The three retrofits, ranked by transformation
- The shallow ledge (baja shelf): a broad, ~20–30cm-deep platform built into one end or along a side — the single most-requested retrofit, the feature guests actually use, and the one that converts a swim-only pool into an all-day pool
- Proper entry steps: wide, graceful steps replacing the boom-era ladder — part accessibility (every generation uses pools), part architecture; corner-radius step sets modernise a dated rectangle on their own
- The in-water bench: seating cast along an edge at conversation depth — the social-pool language retrofitted into existing walls
How concrete gains furniture
New elements are formed and cast against the existing shell — steel-doweled into the structure, waterproofed as one with it (the tanking rules apply at every new joint), then finished to match or, more often, as the excuse the whole pool needed for a resurface. The physics is routine; the craft is in the joints and the finish continuity — a ledge that reads ‘always been there’ versus one that reads ‘added’.
The practical notes
The pool drains for the work, so the one-window rule applies with full force — ledge plus regrout plus lighting plus equipment in a single 2–4 week drain beats four separate projects by miles. Volume drops slightly with every element added (a quiet running-cost bonus), and the retrofit pairs naturally with the wider modernisation checklist — same window, same scaffolding of decisions, one survey to scope it all.
The pool does not need to be bigger — it needs somewhere to be; that is a fortnight of concrete away.
