Acid Washing and Deep Restoration Cleans: When a Pool Needs More Than Maintenance

Acid Washing and Deep Restoration Cleans: When a Pool Needs More Than Maintenance

There is a category of pool that routine service cannot rescue: the surface itself has absorbed years of neglect — staining deep in the plaster, black algae rooted in, scale layered like geology. For these, the restoration toolkit goes deeper: the acid wash and its gentler siblings. Powerful, genuinely transformative — and with rules, because the same chemistry that strips stains strips surface.

The restoration ladder, gentlest first

  • No-drain deep clean: aggressive brushing, targeted stain treatment and elevated chemistry with continuous filtration — solves more cases than owners expect, without the risks below
  • The drain-down scrub: pool emptied (safely — see the draining risks), surface cleaned mechanically and with mild treatments — for scale lines, waterline restoration and stubborn organics
  • The acid wash proper: diluted acid over the drained surface, dissolving a micro-layer of plaster to expose fresh material beneath — the reset button for stained and mottled surfaces

The honesty about acid

An acid wash removes surface — that is literally the mechanism — so a plaster finish only has so many washes in its lifetime, and a surface already thin, rough or past its years can be pushed past rescue by the treatment meant to save it. The professional judgment call: wash, or accept the surface is done and put the money toward resurfacing, which resets the clock entirely. (Rule of thumb we use: if the wash costs a third of a resurface and the plaster is old, resurface.) Neutralising and disposing of wash water responsibly is part of the job; tipping acid water into a garden is not a professional shortcut, it is a professional disqualification.

When restoration cleans earn their place

Newly purchased villas with neglected-but-young pools (the handover scenario); rental resets before photo shoots; and post-rescue pools where the green is gone but its shadows remain. Every one starts the same way: a survey that reads the surface before choosing the rung.

Restoration is surgery, not scrubbing — the skill is knowing which rung of the ladder your surface can afford.
