Pool Heating in Bali: Do You Actually Need It?

Pool Heating in Bali: Do You Actually Need It?

Pool heating in Bali sounds like selling ice to Greenland — the island sits practically on the equator and pools run warm by default. And yet heating enquiries are real and recurring, and some of them are right. The honest map of when heating earns its place two degrees south of the equator, and when it is money warming the sky:

The cases that are actually valid

  • The spa, always: an attached jacuzzi wants genuine heat — 36–38°C is the product; ambient-warm is not a hot tub. This is the one unambiguous yes
  • Highland Bali: Ubud’s hills and beyond run cooler, especially July–August nights and rainy stretches — villas there field genuine “pool is cold” guest comments
  • Shaded and badly-oriented pools: a pool the sun never finds stays stubbornly cool year-round — though fixing this with kilowatts rather than at design time is the expensive apology
  • Premium rentals chasing zero complaints: evening-swim warmth in the cool months as a listing point — valid where the rate supports it

The technology and the bill

The heat pump is the only sensible instrument here — it moves warmth from Bali’s generous air into the water efficiently, and in this climate it works in its happiest operating range. Solar matting is the budget assist (free warmth, modest lift); electric elements belong to spas only. The honest running cost: modest for topping a pool up a few degrees, real for holding a spa hot — which is why heat-on-demand plus a cover on any heated spa is the standard spec, and why heating joins the efficiency conversation rather than escaping it.

The cheaper answers first

Before buying kilowatts, buy physics: darker finishes hold warmth, wind shelter cuts evaporative cooling (evaporation is how pools lose heat here), and placement in sun is free heating for life. Most “cold pool” complaints in lowland Bali trace to those three — and an edge-of-renovation moment is the cheap time to fix them.

Heat the spa, warm the highlands, and let the equator do the rest — it is genuinely good at it.
