Lap Pools in Bali: Designing for People Who Actually Swim
Most of this blog is honest about a truth: villa pools are 90% lounging. But some owners genuinely swim — morning laps as ritual, training for events, or the daily exercise that made them choose villa life over gym life. For them the standard cooling-off pool is a frustration in turquoise, and the lap pool is a different design brief entirely. Here is how to get one right:
The dimensions that matter
- Length first, everything else second: genuinely satisfying lap swimming starts around 12–15 metres; below 10, the turn arrives before the rhythm does. If the plot cannot host the length, be honest early — a beautiful 8m pool with lane ambitions disappoints both jobs (or consider a swim-jet system as the compact compromise, with realistic expectations)
- Width and depth: a single dedicated lane wants ~2.5m+ clear width; 1.2–1.4m constant depth swims better than a deep end nobody trains in — and costs less to build and run
- The straight, uninterrupted line: steps, ledges and social features live at the ends or along one side, never in the swim line
Details swimmers notice
A flat, glare-managed end wall for turns; a subtle floor line for orientation (a design moment — a dark tile stripe in a light pool is both lane rope and aesthetic); water kept a touch cooler than lounging temperature, which in Bali means placement and finish-colour choices more than equipment (dark finishes warm water — swimmers usually want the opposite); and robust circulation, because training bather load works water harder than floating does.
The hybrid most villas actually build
Pure lap pools suit pure swimmers; most families want both — which is the elegant solve of the L-shape or the long pool with a side ledge: an uninterrupted 12m+ lane along one edge, the social shallow zone tucked beside it. It photographs like luxury and trains like sport, and it is a placement puzzle we enjoy solving on narrow Bali plots especially.
Design for the swimmer and the lounger separately, then join the shapes — that is the whole trick.
