Building a Pool by the Ocean: Salt-Proofing Coastal Bali Builds
Bali’s most valuable pool real estate — the beach lanes of Canggu and Seminyak, the Bukit’s cliffs, Sanur’s shore — all sits inside an invisible zone where the air itself is mildly corrosive. Salt spray carries hundreds of metres inland on the sea breeze, and it works on a pool build every hour of every day. Standard-spec construction in this zone does not fail dramatically; it fails early, everywhere at once. The marine playbook:
What salt actually attacks
- The steel inside the concrete: the serious one — chloride reaching reinforcement causes rust-jacking: the steel swells, the concrete spalls, the structure ages decades in years. Prevention is specification: adequate cover, dense low-permeability mix, and coated or corrosion-resistant reinforcement where exposure is severe
- Every metal you can see: handrails, light bezels, hinges, fasteners — anything below 316 marine-grade stainless pits and streaks within seasons
- The equipment room: pumps, boards and contacts corrode fastest of all — sealed housings, ventilation designed against salt ingress, and equipment chosen for coastal duty
- Soft finishes: porous stone and cheap renders weather patchily in the spray zone — finish selection tightens near the water (the climate-materials rules, at maximum strength)
The marine-grade playbook
None of this argues against building by the sea — it argues for specifying for it: marine-appropriate concrete and cover, 316 stainless as the metal floor, salt-rated equipment and lighting, protective sealing on exposed surfaces, and — the cheap multiplier — a freshwater rinse-down of fittings and surrounds as part of routine maintenance. Salt-water chlorination deserves a mention: a fine system anywhere, but in the coastal zone it adds salt inside the pool too, so the whole build must be specified for it (the honest comparison).
The buying question
The premium for marine specification is modest at build time and enormous retrofitted. So the question for any coastal quote is direct: “what exactly changes in this build because we are 300 metres from the ocean?” A detailed answer is a builder; a shrug is a countdown.
The ocean view is the asset; marine specification is its insurance premium — pay it once, at the start.
