Raised and Semi-Inground Pools: The Design Answer to Tricky Bali Plots

The default assumption is that pools live in the ground — but some of Bali’s smartest recent builds lift them partly or fully out of it, and not as compromise: as architecture. The raised pool, its walls doubling as seating and its edge as a design line, is the elegant answer to a family of plot problems that fighting the ground would make expensive. When up beats down:

The plots that call for it

  • Rock and hard digging: where excavation meets limestone (hello, the Bukit), every centimetre down costs; building up trades excavation for structure — often favourably
  • High water tables and flood-prone ground: a raised shell sidesteps the hydrostatic battles that make in-ground pools in wet ground an engineering argument (the empty-pool risks shrink too)
  • Level changes and terraces: on stepped plots the raised pool becomes the terrace edge itself — and the natural platform for a panel or spillover face
  • Services in the way: septic fields and buried infrastructure under the only sunny corner — the retrofit scenario where raising rescues the placement

The design dividend

A raised wall at sitting height (~45–60cm) is furniture the build gives you free: perching edge for parents, staging for towels and drinks, and a clean architectural line that suits both the raw-concrete look and classic stone cladding. The elevated waterline also reads beautifully from inside the villa — water at eye level from a sofa is a quiet luxury flat pools never offer. Scuppers from a raised face into a lower splash zone: the resort move, structurally free.

The build notes

The exposed walls carry water pressure without earth backing them, so the engineering and waterproofing are unforgiving of shortcuts — and the walls are visible forever, so finish quality matters on both faces. Access for the young and the old wants designing (steps become a feature, not an apology). Costs typically land between standard in-ground and the fully structural builds — site-dependent enough that the per-metre stack needs its site multiplier read honestly.

When the ground argues, stop arguing — build the pool the plot was actually asking for.
