Handover day: the pool is full, the water sparkles, the builder is photographing their work. What almost nobody tells the owner is that the pool is not finished — it is beginning. A new pool’s first weeks are a chemical and structural settling-in period, and the care it receives now literally sets properties of the surface for its lifetime. The first 30 days, done right:
What is actually happening in there
- The surface is curing underwater: new plaster and renders continue hardening for weeks after filling, releasing plaster dust and pushing pH relentlessly upward as they do — this is normal, expected, and the reason startup chemistry is a daily sport, not a weekly one
- The water is finding its identity: fresh fill water (whatever its source delivered) arrives unbalanced — alkalinity, calcium and stabiliser all need building to targets deliberately
- The system is proving itself: pump prime, filter pressures, schedules — the shakedown period where installation issues surface while they are still the builder’s warranty problem
The startup protocol
Long daily filtration; frequent brushing of the entire surface (settling plaster dust that is not brushed becomes texture forever); pH tested and corrected near-daily against the curing surface’s upward push; chemistry built to balance in the right order; and restraint — no salt system activation, no heavy chemical corrections, and gentle use until the surface has had its settling window. Skip the protocol and the classic scars appear: mottled staining, rough patches, early scale — cosmetic damage with a lifetime subscription.
