Extending or Reshaping an Existing Pool: When Bigger (or Different) Is Possible
It is a specific kind of villa frustration: the pool works, but it is wrong — too small since the family grew, a dated box on a plot that deserves curves, or oriented away from the view the villa was bought for. The question owners ask quietly: can an existing pool be made bigger, or different? The answer is genuinely yes-sometimes — and the sometimes has rules:
What is structurally possible
- Extension: demolishing one end wall and building on additional length — feasible when ground, access and services allow; the new-to-old structural joint is the critical detail (done properly it is engineered and waterproofed as one; done casually it is a future crack with a subscription)
- Reshaping: softening a rectangle with a new curved end, adding a wing for a shallow zone, or carving in social features — usually easier than pure extension because the footprint barely grows
- Depth changes: raising a too-deep floor is routine (and cuts running cost); digging deeper is major surgery rarely worth its price
- The edge upgrade: the infinity conversion is its own guide — the same viability logic applies here
When extension beats rebuild — and when it does not
The honest crossover: if the existing shell is sound and the change is one wall or one feature, extension typically wins clearly on cost. If the shell is tired, leaking, or the wishlist touches three sides, the numbers converge on a rebuild fast — and a rebuild delivers exactly the pool you want instead of a compromise wearing new tiles. A survey settles it in an hour; guessing settles it in regret.
The silver lining of the empty pool
Any extension drains the pool for weeks — which makes it the natural moment to bundle everything else: resurfacing, equipment renewal, lighting, features. The expensive version of this project is doing it twice; the smart version is one empty-pool window, fully used, timed to the pre-season calendar.
You are not stuck with the pool the previous owner imagined — concrete is more editable than people think.
