Waterproofing: The Invisible System That Decides Your Pool’s Lifespan
Of everything in your pool build, the most important layer is one you will never see again after construction week six: the waterproofing between the concrete shell and the finish. Done right, it is the reason a pool holds water for thirty years. Skipped or skimped — the single most common shortcut in budget Bali builds — it is the reason for every mystery leak, damp garden wall and tiled-over crack we get called to. This is the layer to interrogate before you sign anything.
What proper waterproofing involves
- Concrete that helps: waterproofing starts inside the mix — correct grade, additives and vibration for a dense, low-permeability shell, plus proper curing (the stage impatience destroys)
- The membrane system: cementitious or specialist coatings applied in full, correct thickness over the entire wetted shell — not a quick slurry where convenient
- The detail work that actually decides it: pipe penetrations, light niches, skimmer throats, cold joints and corners — leaks live at details, and detail work is where cheap builds save their money
- The flood test: the shell held full of water and monitored before finishing goes on — the one moment problems are cheap to fix. A builder who resists flood testing is telling you something
Bali multiplies the stakes
Wet-season ground pressure pushes water at the shell from outside; humidity keeps everything damp; slope sites add movement; and rooftop or elevated pools raise the cost of failure from “wet garden” to “wet living room”. This climate does not forgive tanking shortcuts — it finds them, usually in year two or three, under a finish that now has to come off to fix them.
How to buy it well
Make waterproofing a named line in the quote: which system, applied by whom, tested how, warranted for how long. Ask to see the flood test on your own build. It is a modest slice of the total cost — and the difference between a pool and a future excavation.
You are not buying a finish with concrete behind it — you are buying a watertight structure with a finish on top.
