Pool Features That Pay for Themselves: Ranking Upgrades by Rental ROI
Every pool feature has a salesman; few have a spreadsheet. Having built and maintained pools across Bali’s rental hotspots, we see which upgrades guests actually mention, photograph and pay premiums for — and which ones just cost money. Here is the honest ranking for a rental villa.
Tier 1: the rate-movers
- The view edge. On a site with a genuine outlook, an infinity or wet edge is the single biggest rate lever in the Bali market — it changes the villa’s category
- Night lighting done properly. The cheapest Tier-1 feature by far: the dusk photo sells the booking, and evenings are when guests live at the pool
- The shallow ledge (baja shelf). Adults lounge on it, toddlers play on it, phones photograph it — maximum use per square metre of any feature
Tier 2: strong for the right market
- Beach entry — powerful for the family segment, which books longer and rebooks
- Integrated spa — a genuine differentiator for premium listings and honeymoon positioning
- Swim-up social corners — the group-travel magnet
Tier 3: spend with eyes open
Extra length and depth (volume costs forever, earns rarely), water features that exist only for the render, and exotic one-off finishes that complicate maintenance. None are wrong — they are just lifestyle purchases, not investments, and it pays to know which you are making.
Budget the Tier 1 list first; let the render wait its turn.
